I put this book on my TBR long ago and I have been trying to read through it as I have too many books on there that I feel like I will never get to. So I am doing something about it!
For some reason I thought I had read a few of Laura’s other books but I guess I am crazy because after looking at all of her previous work, I have never read the others. Which could be a good thing since the books that I thought I had read of her I hated, but obviously that couldn’t be true.
I went in unsure of this book but I ended up liking it a lot. It reminded me a lot of Reincarnation Blues by Michael Poore, which I have previously reviewed and summarized.
Anyways….
There is this being, most of the time we get to hear them in a female voice, but it changes in other lives they live. She gets attacked and she kills her attacker but dies along side him. And boom, now she is living a different life.
This is like a thing. The guy (his gender also changes but he even states in the book that he feels more like a guy no matter if he comes back as a girl), always finds out main character and kills her before their 18th birthday.
The main character doesn’t know why this keeps happening and is always trying to figure it out but the guy won’t tell her. In most lives they fall in love and it’s a sad ending every time because you can tell he doesn’t want to kill her.
We are mostly following them in 2022 Wales but get flashbacks to other lives they have lived, from times they have found each other young and fall in love to other lives where he shows up only a few days before he has to kill her.
In 2022 Wales, she is trying to donate her bone marrow(?) to her sister who is dying of cancer but when it comes time for the procedure, the sister has an infection and cannot receive it. The main character is trying to find a way to get it done because she turns 18 in a week.
Eventually the main character finds out who the guy is and begs him to let her live until 18 exactly so that way she can donate and hopefully save her sister. He agrees but says that he HAS to kill her by the time she is 18 so she better figure it out.
She eventually finds a doctor that will do the procedure and is able to get it done a day (or the day of?) her 18th birthday.
When it comes time for her to die, the main character asks again why he has to keep killing her and said that she won’t let him kill her willingly unless he tells her why. He finally does and tell her that she is the devil.
The back story is that she is a devil and has to reap souls so that way the “Mother” can feed and get stronger. The boy is the first and only soul she reaps.
Basically his sister was dying and the devil agreed to make a deal that if he suffer for a week by laying on burning coals and then worked for the Mother then she would save his sister.
Unfortunately they didn’t make the contract good enough and the sister died of something else before the boy could come back to Earth after his payment. Out of rage, he kills the devil who made the deal with him. In that the cycle began. They were reborn and when they turned 18 they were sent back to the otherworld to start reaping souls.
Neither of them wanted to do that so they had to lay on burning coals until they broke. When they did that they went back to Earth and the boy kills the devil again.
They keep living like this for thousands of years until we reach 2022 Wales.
*throughout all of this the boy remembers every life but the main character will forget past lives eventually*
They decide that they are going to go back to the Otherworld do kill the Mother and hopefully release them from their contract.
Unfortunately, killing her doesn’t work and they will be forced to suffer on the burning coals forever or until they agree to reap.
The main character eventually makes a deal with the Mother that she can take their love and the cycle will be broken. Together they make the decision to give up their love. As the Mother is taking it, she starts dying since their love is too strong for her since she is used to only taking suffering.
In the next life they live, somehow, they eventually find each other. This time, neither of them remember each other, but still manage to find each other.
That’s where the book ends so you are left with the assumption that they end up together and die togethe.
I really liked this book. I don’t know if I would read it again but I will recommend it to everyone who will listen. It was honestly another beautiful story of reincarnation and finding love where you can.
ANNNDDDD. bye
