I started this book over a year ago. I bought it while I was in Salt Lake City at a bookshop Nat took me to (although, if I am in a bookshop it’s very likely I am with Nat). I saw this book and just thought it would be a cute one to pick and read on my downtime.
And obviously, it took me almost a year to read. Honestly I read the physical book for the first half and then listened for the last half. I just knew from the first page that it was going to be sad and reading a book that will make me cry is just a hard thing to do. I was tired on seeing it in my currently reading on Goodreads which is why I pulled the trigger to finish it audiobook style (at 2.5x speed of course).
Guess what. It made me cry.
Anyways here it is.
You get multiple different point of views from this book. You get to hear from the cat, Satoru, from each of the friends that they visit along the way, and the aunt at the end of the book.
A snarky stay cat befriends a single guy. Eventually the cat and man “move in together”. Years later Satoru (man) takes Nana (boy cat) on a road trip.
They visit 3 different people, each person being someone from Satoru’s past. Someone from elementary school, middle school, and high school. All the while, Satoru is trying to rehome this cat.
None of the places work out for various reasons and in the end he keeps the cat with him while he moves in with his aunt.
It turns out that Satoru is sick and dying. Satoru spends as much time as possible at home to be with Nana, but eventually he moves permanently to the hospital. Nana escapes and spends the rest of Satoru’s days on the grounds until eventually going back to the aunt’s place once Satoru passes away.
Nana always things about Satoru and is excited for the day that he will be able to join him again.
The end.
This honestly was such a beautiful story but also I would personally not read it again. Although I would recommend it to those that seem like type to enjoy a quick book (sure it took me almost a year to read this but also I would only pick it up when I didn’t have any other books checked out and had free time, which is rare). I am happy that I finally got the audiobook form checked out from the library so that the story can have a conclusion. I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads.
Bye.
