I read this book because. 1. my friend recommended it to me. 2. I got a free ebook copy of it. and 3. KINDA because of the movie but I finished this book a few weeks ago and I haven’t even made an effort to watch the movie.
I really enjoyed that this book was nonlinear. There were moments that I felt like the writing wasn’t his best but the story was more than entertaining to keep me going. Also big fan of the short book.
This one feels hard to summarize but also I think I have just been super tired lately.
In the first of three parts of this book we arrive in a crumbling world. For some reason Chuck Krantz is alllll over the world with big “happy retirement” signs all over the place. As an ad on the tv (when the internet and all that jazz work), billboards, in the sky, and in the end just showing up on all the windows is every neighborhood.
We are following a man as the world is crumbling and as he is grappling with that fact, also he misses and is still in love with his ex wife. The first part ends with them together at her house and the world ends at that same time.
Part two is a quick short about a memory of Chuck dancing on the street. This was right as his illness was starting to take over and before he got his diagnosis.
Part three is a young Chuck living with his grandparents after being orphaned. There is a room in the house that his grandfather doesn’t let anyone in. I feel like it’s because the grandfather says that it’s haunted but I don’t remember. Eventually both of his grandparents have passed and before he sells the house he goes into the room and sees an older version of himself dying.
It really is such a short book that was interesting. I liked it enough that I am curious how they made a movie out of it so maybe I will watch it soon.
Anyhow, peace
