To start this off…

Nat made me read this book because of a Goodreads challenge. I don’t exactly understand what the challenge is, I could look it up to understand it further but honestly, to me it doesn’t matter. Nat had to read a romantasy book and this is the one he choose. Although you do not know Nat, one thing that is well known about him, he is a book snob. This is not at all in the category of books he would read.

But me? Absolutely.

He begged me to read it to compare it to the other books I have read, so going in, I was not expecting the best.

So here you go, a complete plot summary for A Broken Blade by Melissa Blair.

But actually, some “world building” first…

There are mortals, dark/light fae, and elves. The mortal King killed basically all the elves and most of the light/dark fae. All the halflings he either killed, enslaved, or left for dead. The “mortal” King basically is immortal somehow and says that the gods gave him a year of life for all the elves he has killed but obviously that is BS and he is a lying bastard.

Okay not on with the story

FMC, Keera, is the King’s Blade, his right hand man and in charge of his army who he calls the shades and I am pretty sure they are all girls or “females” and also all halflings. She has a major drinking problem (I felt like it was poorly handled so be prepared) and also has scars all over her body. Every time this girl kills someone she asks for their name and then cARVES IT ON HER SKIN. Something about making herself remember all the lives she has taken and couldn’t spare. Idk girl, get over yourself.

She is after The Shadow, someone who the Stupid King is concerned about to potentially overthrowing the king or something like that but that part isn’t really that important. She is sent after him but her alcoholism really gets in the way when she finds him. Then he ASSULTS her by forcing a kiss on her when he sees her face (and shock, he is the love interest).

When she gets back to the palace, Stupid King and the Evil Prince are mad at her, Suspicious Prince is like “wait we should send her away to the fae lands to see if she can find him and kill him, girl don’t come back until he is dead”. Stupid King agrees to this and she is gone.

After a long ass journey she makes it and tries to be sneaky but rip they knew it the second she showed up on their land. She gets invited to a ball where she meets Nicholas (I listened to the audiobook so I don’t know how his name is actually spelled), and two other characters whose names I have already forgotten about but one is an elf lady and the other is the Shadow (oooooohhhh).

They don’t like that she is there except the Nicholas guy cause he is a flirt. Eventually Keera figures out who the Shadow is and strikes up a deal to work together to kill the Stupid King.

They decide they want to blow up the canal to ruin trade to weaken the Stupid King and to help Keera gain his trust to get closer to him to kill him.

They have to go to a party to steal a key from some important guy to use to get into the canal, while at the party Keera runs into the Suspicious Prince and she has to tell him a little fib that also has some of the truth in it about the Shadow blowing up the canal. Suspicious Prince heads back to inform the Stupid King.

Keera is like “oh shit, we have to do this ASAP before it gets foiled.” They speed run making a bomb and go blow up the canal. Keera gets caught in the exposion and almost dies but surprise! She has crazy healing powers and the group thinks she might be extra special fae halfling.

They ride off to the palace where she meets with the Stupid King. The Suspicious Prince also tells a fib about where he was and how he heard about the canal. He also talks the Stupid King into giving her full command of the army.

She goes to the army and gets things ready for… something? I don’t remember and although it’s important, it didn’t feel that important. She leaves them in charge with the person below her and is going to leave to meet up with her homies.

She meets up with the Shadow and they have a steamy scene, the next morning he leaves quickly for a mysterious reason. She gets ready to leave and gets tranquilized.

She wakes up hours (days?) later and oops it’s Suspicious Prince and oh shock the Shadow is his person and he wants to kill his dad.

The end.

So I will probably read the next book because what else to I have but the opportunity to rot my brain more. I gave this a 2 star on Goodreads.

Bye
