I had no idea what this book was about when I picked it up. I put it on my list awhile ago and obviously thought that it might be a romance. I did only enough research into it though to figure out that it was not in fact a romance.
But still, no clue, and was I sure surprised lol.
Phoebe is going to kill herself. It’s a very matter of fact thing that she has planned. She arrives at a resort in Rhode Island where she had once planned a trip with her now ex-husband. She feels like there is nothing for her now that he husband cheated and divorced her for their coworker, her dissertation has stalled, her work is not gratifying, and her cat died.
Meanwhile the resort accidentally booked her room because there is a wedding happening all week that has completely taken over. The bride, Delilah, finds Phoebe in the elevator. She tries to figure out what part of the family she is on when Phoebe plainly tells Delilah her plans to kill herself.
Now we get a lot of chapters that details why she is planning on killing herself.
Understandably Delilah is not happy about this but it doesn’t appear to be in a way that means she doesn’t want someones life to end but that she doesn’t want it to happen during her wedding week.
Later as Phoebe is prepping, the bride shows up to talk her out of it. While there she talks and talks to our main character. Tells her all about the family and her dead dad and rude mom and how she found her husband.
She takes the cat pain killers and lays down to die, meanwhile the opening reception is happening and Delilah’s mom makes a toast. Delilah had talked to Phoebe about how she worried this would happen because she felt like her mom was unhinged.
In that moment, Phoebe realized that she wanted to hear the rest of the story and not die so she makes herself vomit and passes out on the bathroom floor.
Waking up the next morning, Delilah lets herself in to find Phoebe still alive and basically makes her join in on the wedding. She even pays for the room for her for the week.
Phoebe goes through the week, becoming the maid of honor and attending all the celebrations. Although, during this time she accidentally falls in love with the groom. She also realizes that Delilah doesn’t want to get married but is really only doing it because it was what her dead dad wanted and that it felt like the right thing to do.
ALSO, it turns out that the grooms brother in law was the one who originally was interested in Delilah and tried to get together with her. He confesses this during the rehearsal dinner. This causes Delilah to realize that she really doesn’t want to and calls off the wedding the morning of.
It leaves with an open ending to let you interpret whether Phoebe and the groom get together.
It took me a little before I really got into this book. I am really not at a great time in my life to read a book about someone being depressed and killing themselves but it turned into quite a comedy.
After realizing that she wants to keep living, Phoebe started living for herself. She observed the world and said what she was thinking. She came a very straight forward person which put her into weird situations and also let her become a person that others would come up and divulge secrets to. Also because she gave literally no shits, she would ask the most insane questions and others would answer her.
